State House recognizes PA maple producers, Causer says

HARRISBURG – The state House voted with its sweet tooth on Wednesday, designating the week of March 15-22 as Maple Producers Week in Pennsylvania, said Rep. Martin Causer (R-Turtlepoint), author of the resolution.

“Pennsylvania ranks fifth in the nation in maple syrup production, so it’s an important agricultural commodity in our Commonwealth,” Causer said. “But more importantly it’s just plain delicious! Whether you’re eating pancakes, waffles, French toast or even a dish of ice cream, real Pennsylvania maple syrup makes it so much better.”

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, maple syrup production actually declined in 2014, in every state except Pennsylvania. Last year, the state produced 146,000 gallons of syrup with a production value of more than $4.7 million. That’s up from 134,000 gallons and a production value of more than $3.7 million in 2013.

In addition to syrup, maple sap is also used to make butter, candies, caramels, taffy, cotton candy and more.

Several maple producers across the state host “Maple Taste and Tour” weekends during the month of March. The events include open houses at maple syrup operations, samples and demonstrations.
