Senior Citizens Expo Set for Aug. 8; Causer Offices to be Closed

BRADFORD – Rep. Martin Causer’s (R-Turtlepoint) offices in Bradford and Coudersport will be closed on Friday, Aug. 8, for his annual Senior Citizens Expo.

The expo is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Sports and Fitness Building gymnasium. Causer said his staff will have a table set up at the expo to answer questions about the many state assistance programs available to older Pennsylvanians. Dozens of other businesses and organizations will also offer valuable information at the expo, and a free lunch will be served.

“I encourage area senior citizens and their caregivers to take advantage of the opportunities available at the expo and join us for this informative event,” Causer said.

Because staff from both local offices will be at the expo, Causer’s offices will be closed all day on Aug. 8 and will reopen on Monday, Aug. 11.

Information about the senior expo is available at RepCauser.com.

Port A - Smethport alumni soccer this Friday

Alumni soccer teams from Port Allegany and Smethport will clash on Friday evening, Aug. 1, to renew their high school rivalry while raising money for a good cause.

The game is slated for a 7:30 p.m. opening kick at the Smethport Area High School field, with warmups at 7. While there's no charge for admission, the group plans to give all proceeds from donations and concession-stand sales to Tristyn Dennis and his family.

According to Todd Mealy, one of the organizers, the idea grew out of local open-field sessions and pickup games which typically drew anywhere from 30-50 participants. With many former varsity players from Port and Smethport involved, the next logical step was to play for bragging rights.

"We're friends with them – of course, not on the field – but we've all known each other for years and years, and our programs started at about the same time,” said Mealy, a 2008 Port High grad and the Gators' first Big 30 All-Star in the sport. “We decided, there's enough of us in the area every year, why don't we just play a game?”

The two squads met for the first time last August, with the Hubbers claiming a 2-1 nailbiter. The group decided to add a fundraising component this year, taking their cue from the success of Port's alumni football games.

They chose to give whatever they raise to Tristyn Dennis, the son of Larry and Natalia Dennis of Smethport, who continues to undergo treatment for leukemia through UPMC Pittsburgh.

“I had heard about the Dennis family and what they had done for them at the football game,” Mealy said. “We have no overhead, no costs besides the insurance policy.”

Noting that the concession stand will feature the Corner Pizza Company's namesake item, he added, “I'm looking for $200 and upward. That's my goal, which isn't a gigantic number, but would be an awesome start for our first year of trying to donate.”

The rosters include several other Big 30 All-Stars, including Port's high-scoring tandem of Scotty Brookens and Tyler Kittilson and Smethport's Dario Caminite, the 2012 Olean Times Herald Player of the Year.

“It makes for an exciting game. You have college-quality players out on the pitch all at once – over half of us played in college,” Mealy said. “We're definitely competitive. We definitely do not mess around as soon as we step on the field.

“I think it's going to be another really exciting, really fun game.”

Pitt-Bradford launches virtual tour of campus

BRADFORD, PA – The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford has launched a new virtual tour to give prospective students, their parents and other online visitors a feel for the campus and its facilities as well as the academic programs and extracurricular activities that take place there.

The tour, which can be seen at www.upb.pitt.edu and tour.pittbradford.org, was created by Campus Tours of Auburn, Maine, with assistance from faculty, staff and students.

“This tour showcases our beautiful campus and modern facilities,” said Pat Frantz Cercone, executive director of communications and marketing who oversaw the project, “as well as the fascinating academic projects and exciting activities that take place here.

“We hope prospective students and their parents, along with other online visitors, will find the virtual tour helpful, and after taking it will want to visit Pitt-Bradford in person to see for themselves how amazing our campus is.”

The tour features 20 stops, from Hanley Library to the CSI House, from the Richard E. and Ruth McDowell Sport and Fitness Center to Residence Life. Each stop includes a short video in which a Pitt-Bradford student provides details for that particular location, several indoor and outdoor photos, and links to more information. A few stops also have additional academic-related videos.

Five of the stops also feature 360-degree panoramic photos: Bromeley Family Theater in Blaisdell Hall, the Kenneth C. Jadlowiec Fitness Center in the Sport and Fitness Center, the KOA Dining Room in the Frame-Westerberg Commons, the Dr. Robert B. Bromeley Quadrangle, and the Kessel Athletic Complex.

The Outdoor Learning stop highlights the unique hands-on opportunities students have because of the campus’ location, including classes and research conducted in the Tunungwant Creek or along the Richard E. McDowell Community Trail and internships in the Allegheny National Forest.

Seven Pitt-Bradford students served as narrators for the project: Love Lee, a 2014 graduate in broadcast communications; Dan Robinson, a 2014 graduate in broadcast communications; Saul Rubin, a biology major from Silver Spring, Md.; Hannah Chai, a 2014 graduate in hospitality management; Alana Stewart, a public relations major from Powder Springs, Ga.; Ashley Fitzpatrick, a broadcast communications major from Bradford; and Justin Pabon, a broadcast communications major from Tobyhanna.

Visitors to the new tour can navigate it in two ways: They can choose any or all of the 20 stops listed in the menu and access them in any order and as often as they choose. Visitors also can navigate the tour by using the interactive map, a detailed representation of campus. When a visitor clicks on a location on the map, the map will zoom in on that stop, and the student narration will begin. Or, visitors can traverse through the tour using a combination of the two.

The new tour is optimized for mobile devices and also is GPS integrated, making it easier for first-time visitors to get around when they’re on campus. Visitors on campus with a mobile device can access the virtual tour, which will provide a prompter each time they’re near a particular location. They can then access that stop on their device to learn more as they approach the location.

In addition to highlighting locations and activities on campus, the tour features two stops dedicated to opportunities off campus. The Bradford, Pa., stop highlights what is available in town, including the Main Street Movie House, restaurants and shops.

The Points of Interest stop showcases the many recreational opportunities in the region and beyond, including swimming and biking in Allegany State Park, hiking and fishing in the Allegheny National Forest, skiing and snowboarding at Holiday Valley, and shopping and sight-seeing in Erie, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, N.Y., Niagara Falls and Toronto, Canada.
