Montecalvo succeeds Montecalvo on IDA / By Martha Knight

SMETHPORT—The recent retirement from public life of Al Montecalvo of Lewis Run left the McKean County Industrial Development Authority briefly without a Montecalvo. The long-serving borough official had been active in the IDA and numerous other agencies.

Tuesday morning the McKean County Commissioners filled that slot in the IDA by appointing Al Montecalvo’s great nephew, Mike Montecalvo, to serve out the unexpired term of Al Montecalvo, which will end December 31, 2017.

Commissioner Al Pingie commented that the elder Montecalvo had been outstanding in his service as mayor and as councilperson, in Lewis Run. Commissioner chairman Joe DeMott voiced “thanks for the good work” of Al Montecalvo.

The commissioners authorized the renewal of the county’s contract with Erie County for part-time use of Erie County’s forensic pathology services. McKean County pays a $5,000 annual retainer to maintain its arrangement for such services, plus per-use fees when forensic pathology services are required by the McKean County coroner’s office.

Commissioners agreed to the addition of Marietta Davis of Erie to the list of foster care providers, as requested by the Department of Human Services.

Two real estate tax exemptions were approved, at the recommendation of chief tax assessor Angelia Tennies. One property is 928 South Avenue, Bradford, a .36-acre parcel owned by the City of Bradford at a sheriff’s sale, which will remain vacant until it is sold.

The other exemption went to the Regular Baptist Church on Route 6, Smethport, and applies to a quarter-acre right-of-way for recreation activities.

DeMott read into the record a proclamation designating March 27 as Child Advocacy Center Day. In the proclamation the commissioners “emphasize the importance of understanding the devastating problem of child abuse within the county, and the need for all McKean County residents to help in the fight to protect McKean County’s most valuable asset – our children.”

Commissioner Cliff Lane was absent from the brief meeting, because he was at an out-of-town Conservation meeting.

The commissioners met a week earlier than their usual fourth Tuesday pattern, because the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania will meet next week, in Hershey.

Police Report 3/10 - 3/16

An officer dealt with a 10-year-old girl who was aggressive and defiant toward her mother. Another officer sorted out the details surrounding injuries sustained by a fall victim. A pipeline trailer’s axels clipped an SUV that was attempting to pass it on the right.

Those were some of the matters that Port Allegany Police dealt with in the week that began Monday, March 10.

Last Monday at 11:40 a.m. Chief Dave Distrola observed the aftermath of a motor vehicle crash at the intersection of Route 6 with North Main Street. A tractor-trailer operated by Rich Ray of Welded Construction, hauling pipe, was turning left from North Main into Route 6, and an SUV driven by Robert McGarvey of Port Allegany pulled up on the right in an attempt to beat the red light. As the tractor trailer turned, the rear axles swung to the right and clipped the SUV. Both vehicles were drivable, and no injuries were reported. The drivers were advised to exchange information.

Last Wednesday at 2:32 p.m. Distrola received a complaint about an erratic driver on Broad Street. The caller knew the driver, and reported that the driver had spun his tires pulling out of a parking spot in front of the caller’s neighbor’s, and had fishtailed down the street. Distrola attempted to locate the driver, without success.

Thursday at 3 a.m. Officer Tony Tanner received a complaint from a North Main Street resident indicating that there were three cars in the Pump House parking lot beeping their horns. Two of them were gone when Tanner arrived. The third operator indicated the beeping was an attempt to get a passenger into the car. Tanner advised them to leave.

Thursday at 11 a.m. Distrola received a report of a possible identity theft. The caller was referred to Coudersport police because the incident had occurred in that jurisdiction. The caller said someone had cashed a check in the amount of $3,200 and deposited approximately $1,200 into her account, but the check bounced. This was said to have happened twice this year.

At 3:30 p.m. Distrola was called about a car said to be blocking a drive on Willow Street. He found that the report was not accurate.

At 5:07 p.m. Officer Tanner was dispatched to Chestnut Street for a report of a hit-and-run crash. Investigation revealed that the damage probably was sustained at another location, because no fragments of the car were located on the ground where the damaged vehicle was parked. The caller was advised to contact the insurance company.

At 5:44 p.m. Tanner assisted a motorist with a vehicle lock-out at Sheetz.

At 6:12 p.m. Tanner was dispatched to a South Main Street location for a report of an out-of-control juvenile. Apparently a 10-year-old girl was being aggressive and defiant toward her mother. Tanner spoke to the child and advised her to calm down.

Friday at 11 p.m. Officer Adam Dickerson was dispatched to 110 Arnold Avenue for a reported domestic disturbance. Two tenants, allegedly intoxicated, were screaming and yelling at each other and could be heard by neighbors. One was said to have slammed the front door and broken a door window. Dickerson cited Jason and Angel Caiola for disorderly conduct.

Saturday at 6:40 p.m. Dickerson was dispatched to 77 Church Street for a report of an overdose. Investigation revealed that two teenaged male juveniles had consumed about 20 pills each of Musinex-DM. The juveniles were transported to Bradford Regional Medical Center for observation.

At 10:16 p.m. Dickerson was dispatched to the scene of a crash on Route 6 West. He stood by until Pennsylvania State police arrived, because the driver was found to be intoxicated.

At 11:22 p.m. Dickerson was contacted by Sayre Hospital about a fall victim who had been transported from Port Allegany earlier. A Sayre staff member indicated that they were doing a follow-up because the report by EMTs did not match the injuries sustained by the fall victim. The investigation revealed that there was no evidence to support suspicions of a criminal act. The witness who found the fall victim was contacted. He provided detailed information that satisfied the attending physician’s concerns.
