Howard R. Amell, U. S. Army/WWII Veteran

Howard R. Amell, 90, 0f N. Brooklynside Rd., passed away Thursday (Apr. 4, 2013) in Sena Kean Manor, Smethport.

Born Aug. 12, 1922, in Port Allegany, he was a son of Albert and Florence Chapin Amell. On Aug. 24, 1962, in Shinglehouse, he married Phyllis M. Chandler, who survives.

Mr. Amell was a lifetime resident of the area and a graduate of the Port Allegany High School, Class of 1940.

Howard was employed by Pierce Glass Co. (now Verallia Co.) as a machine operator, retiring in 1982, after 41 years of service.

He was a veteran, having served in the US Army, during WWII.

Mr. Amell attended the Turtlepoint Evangelical Chuuch and was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge 460, Port Allegany.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Phyllis, are two stepsons, Gilbert E. (Rayann) Amell and Keith A. Amell both of Port Allegany; a daughter, Jackie (Dave) Kaples of Woodbridge, VA; two stepdaughters, Merita L.  Greenleaf of Orlando, FL, Kathy L. Amell of Eldred; several grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren; two great-great grand-children; and two half-brothers, Michael and Skip Amell both of Port Allegany; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by parents, stepmother, Margarie Amell, and a stepson, Lawrence A. Amell.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Saturday in the Switzer Funeral Home, Port Allegany, where a funeral service will be held a 2 p.m. Sunday (Apr. 7, 2013) with Rev. Anthony Edgell, pastor of the Turtlepoint Evangelical Church, officiating. Burial will be in Grimes Cemetery, Port Allegany.

Memorials can be made to Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge 460.

A military service will be conducted by the Port Allegany Honor Guard immediately following the service, at the funeral home.
