BRADFORD, PA – The
staff of Pitt-Bradford’s literary magazine Baily’s Beads will unveil its travel
themed 2015 issue at its annual Celebration Wednesday, Jan. 21.
The event, which is
free and open to the public, will take place in the Mukaiyama University Room
of the Frame-Westerberg Commons at 7:30pm. There will be refreshments and
prizes as well as an open mic for those who wish to share poetry, fiction,
creative nonfiction or other original work.
The 2015 magazine
features stories, poems, and art that are all related to travel, but also work
that doesn’t. For the first time in several years, Baily’s Beads will include a
full-color section of art, which was advised by Anna Lemnitzer, assistant
professor of art, who also worked with students on the cover and internal
design. Dr. James Salvo, assistant professor of speech, served as technical
advisor for the magazine.
The 2015 issue will
have an illustrated children’s story, also a first for the magazine, as well as
four novel excerpts from different genres -- fantasy, women’s fiction, and
middle-grade fiction.
Student editors for
the issue are Selese Huth, a writing major from Tionesta; Kayla Beers, a
writing major from Campbell, N.Y., and McKayla Murdock, a public relations
major from Downingtown. Dr. Nancy McCabe, professor of writing, served as the
magazine’s main faculty advisor. The staff of the magazine held a
fundraiser that sold t-shirts featuring cover art by Amy Hughes, an
interdisciplinary arts major from Smethport.
The 2014 comic book
themed edition of Baily’s Beads received a first award from American Scholastic
Press Association, citing Baily’s Beads as one of four magazines nationally
that had the “Best Theme.”
Baily’s Beads has
been named one of the twelve best student magazines in the country twice by the
Columbia Scholastic Press Association and the most outstanding student magazine
nationally three times by the American Scholastic Press Association.
For those unable to
make the unveiling of the 2015 issue, copies will be available throughout campus
or by contacting McCabe at ngm4@pitt.edu.
Submissions are now
