Baily's Beads seeks submissions from community, students in K-12

BRADFORD, PA –  The 2015 edition of Baily’s Beads, the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford’s award-winning literary magazine, will feature a special section of poetry by local K-12 students.

Editors Kayla Beers, a writing major from Campbell, N.Y., and McKayla Murdock, a writing major from Downingtown, are looking for writing that focuses on sensory images. 

“Rather than focusing on rhyming and big topics, concentrate on finding new ways to describe scenes and feelings,” Murdock suggested.

“We’d like to see honest emotion and original imagery rather than abstractions,” Beers said. 

Submissions from K-12 students should include written permission from a parent or guardian for the work to be published if accepted. 

Baily’s Beads also seeks submissions from Pitt-Bradford students and community members. Poetry, short stories, novel excerpts, memoir, travel writing, personal essays, plays, comics, and translations are accepted year round, but the magazine staff will only consider work for the 2015 issue until April 4. The staff also seeks photography, drawings, paintings and other artwork in JPEG form, especially black and white. 

Work should have a cover sheet with the author’s name and contact information, but the author’s name should not appear anywhere else on the manuscript.

Poetry should be single spaced, while prose should be double spaced.  Writers may submit up to 20 pages.  Submissions should be sent by e-mail attachment to bailys@pitt.edu.
