Olean Medical Group (Olean, N.Y.) will soon open offices in
Port Allegany, according to CEO Daniel Strauch.
The location will be in a downtown landmark building across
from the Square, at the corner of the south block of the business district. The
building recently was acquired by a new entity called 28 Main. The company will
lease part of Maple Street Commons, for sidewalk, ramp and entryway from the
side of the building, where a new entry is being constructed.
Maple Street Commons is a corner plot of land where once
stood Meacham’s Hardware, Port Allegany’s longest continuously operating retail
business until fire claimed the wood frame structure years ago. The site was
not large enough for construction of a replacement building under modern zoning
and building regulations, but became part of a downtown revitalization and
streetscape project, adding green space, decorative planters and benches and
several parking spaces.
The medical services Olean Medical Group plans to offer
include endocrinology and cardiology. There will be a physician assistant
and a nurse practitioner, with a primary care doctor expected to become part of
the mix soon. Referrals and consultation with practitioners at the OMG base in
Olean will be available as needed.
There will be three or four part-time staff persons, Strauch
said. OMG hopes to hire from the Port Allegany area.
Hours will be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays, by appointment,
Strauch said.
Opening is at least two months away, he said. Meanwhile, renovations
are proceeding inside, and a new main entrance on the Maple Street side is
being constructed. There will also be a service entrance and secondary exit at
the rear.
Bricks removed in creating new doorways were stockpiled for
use in making pillar supports for the weather-protection roof over the main
entrance, according to Mick Caulkins of 28 Main. The building has been a part
of the business district for generations.
