River recreation among EconDev topics/By Martha Knight

The recreational potential of the Allegheny River will be the focus of a committee formed by the Port Allegany Economic Development Corporation at its recent membership meeting.

Newly elected president James Carlson appointed Bill Burleson, Jr. to chair the group, and named Mickey Dates and Mick Caulkins as committee members.

The committee hopes to recruit other enthusiasts and members of enterprises with interests in water trails, kayaking and boating, camping and hiking. Interested people throughout the Roulette, Port Allegany, Turtlepoint area are encouraged to contact committee members or James Carlson.

There was considerable discussion of grant possibilities, with McKean County Commissioners chairman Joe DeMott suggesting that the county could be a local applicant for some grants. Consultant Bob Veilleux outlined funding sources and application timelines.

Bob Briggs of DayOne Systems described his business, headquartered in Port Allegany with another base in Rochester, N.Y. He has hired a number of locals with the needed technology qualifications, and is seeking more. Offices are in the Carlson Building in the business district.

Officers elected in addition to Jim Carlson were Burleson, vice-president; Dates, secretary; and Susan Carlson, treasurer.

Directors elected were Sue Barnett, Mick Caulkins, Keith Delacour, DeMott, Dave Fair, Randy Hobbs, Sharen Horvath, Andrew Johnson, Mary Mensch, Christa Schott and Jonathan Stehle. Officers also serve on the board of directors.
