...and the lightening strikes

Lightning struck the tree that supports this tree house at the Mick and Jodee Caulkins place on Arnold Ave., Port Allegany, at about 4:30 p.m. Thursday, tearing off bark and pieces of the structure. Then it rode the zip line attached to another tree, just as Gage, Shaylee and Briar Caulkins and their friends would do to alight from the tree house platform. Apparently this playful lightning bolt wanted a campfire, for it ignited the tree at the other end of the line. That tree was still blazing furiously Friday morning, creating a triple fireplace effect at the base, with smoke venting through some holes in a trunk seemingly little damaged on the outside. The tree was felled soon after that, but continued to smoulder.  Martha Knight Photo
