Pitt-Bradford's Sustainability Committee Offers Gardening and Apiary Workshops

Bradford, PA – The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford’s Sustainability Committee will be sponsoring two free talks on gardening and beekeeping on Saturday, April 13, at 9 a.m. at the Harriett B. Wick Chapel.

The first talk by Robin Cauvel, will be “Raised Bed Gardening” and will include a question and answer session. Cauvel has been gardening most of her life, even as a toddler helping her father toss stones and pull weeds out of their garden. She and her husband, Bruce, became interested in raised bed gardening five years ago. They started with one bed and now have eight. The Cauvels freeze most of their bounty and give away the rest to family and friends. Robin Cauvel also grows her own herbs and lots of flowers.

At 10 a.m., Tom Frair will talk about “Beekeeping” and answer questions. Frair is a lifelong resident of Lafayette Township, where he has kept bees for nearly 30 years. He serves as a forestry consultant, primarily to private forestland owners. Frair is also a Certified Arborist and serves as the municipal forester for Warren and Wellsville, N.Y., as well as communities in the region. He and his wife operate a greenhouse business, the “Frair Hause Greenhaus,” where they custom grow most of the annual landscape plants for Pitt-Bradford. He grows garlic, cut flowers, herbaceous perennials, herbs and fall mums for sale at Warren Farmers’ Market, the Cuba (N.Y.) Garlic Festival, and his own roadside stand. Frair is a graduate of Penn State University with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in forestry.
