Recreation Authority President,
Tony Edgell, is pictured showing plans for the community pool to Beth
Stuaffer, Jeff and Kristi Barber and Josh Nelson at a recent meeting
held to discuss pool renovations. It has been 35 years since the last
pool renovation. Total cost for the project will be $940,000 which
would include new lights, new concrete, slides, splash pad, seating, new
training pool, zero depth entry, heater, new fencing and gunite lining
instead of the current fiberglass. There would also be a grassy area.
The renovation would be done in two stages with the first stage
beginning in 2017.
Edgell
said the pool has been running on a shoe string and it shows. It is
not possible to keep the pool as is, making repairs as needed. The
filtering system is the main problem. It would require new plumbing
which would lead to redoing the concrete and once the concrete is
changed it would become necessary to meet ADA code with a minimum of two
entry access points and re-doing the ramp and it would snowball from
there.
If
nothing is done to the pool, Edgell believes the longest this pool will
last is five years. The renovation would make the pool a very "family
friendly" place to spend the summer. The splash pad and slides along
with the seating and grassy area would especially interest families with
young children. The concession stand would also be open.
There
are matching grants that would help with the cost, but the funds first
need to be raised to reach the matching amounts. Groups, individuals
and organizations are encouraged to get involved in making the pool
renovation happen. Pam Fischer Photo
