Carole N. Smith, 69, of Port Allegany, PA, died Saturday, January
17, 2015, while in the care of Vitas Hospice at Memorial West Hospital
in Pembroke Pines, FL. She passed peacefully after a long, courageous
battle with cancer; she was surrounded by family and friends.
Carole
was born in Olean NY on February 16, 1945 to James A. Cartwright and
Dorothy E. (Holly) Cartwright. Raised in Shinglehouse, she attended
Shinglehouse Elementary School and later Oswayo Valley High School in
Shinglehouse, PA. She played violin for several years and was very
active in school chorus and choir.
She married
Larry Amell in 1963 and moved to Port Allegany, PA to begin her life as
a homemaker and a mother of 3 children. Carole was an avid
hunter/sportsman, tole painter and craft artist as well as an
accomplished bowler. She remarried in 1972 to Chet Smith of Port
Allegany and also became a step mother of two.
Carole
worked at Pierce Glass Co, later becoming Ball-Foster for 30 years in
Port Allegany, retiring in 2004 to enjoy her hobbies and home. A friend
to many, she helped raise a granddaughter and 2 grandsons.
Carole
was preceded in death by her parents; husband Larry Amell, younger
sister Brenda Tarbox, step-brother Edward Elliott and step-son Richard
Smith.
She is survived by her sons Steve Smith
(Cindy Remington) and Doug Smith of Port Allegany, daughters Wendy Jo
Sassman (Kenneth) of Davie FL, Dawn Rupert of Bradford, PA, brothers,
Ken Cartwright (Jan) of Mill City Oregon and Dan Elliott (Debbie) of
Port Allegany, four grandchildren, Jahred Smith (Christina) of
Stonewood, WV, Jory Smith of Philadelphia, PA, Samantha Metzger of Port
Allegany, Nicole Sassman of Davie, FL one great granddaughter Jahden
Smith of Eldred, PA, several nieces and nephews as well as her extended
Amell family, Phyllis (Howard), Gilbert, Keith, Kathy and Merita.
No
immediate funeral arrangements have be made other than her request for
cremation. A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date.
