Alvin B. Walker, U. S. Army Veteran



Alvin B. Walker, 93, of N. Elm St., passed away Tuesday (Jan. 6, 2015) in Cole Memorial Hospital, Coudersport.
    
Born December 4, 1921, in Austin, PA, he was a son of Leon and Ethel Atkinson Walker.  On Sept. 17, 1949, in Port Allegany, he married Kathryn E. Smith, who died Feb. 22, 2008. They were married 56 years.
    
Alvin was lifetime resident of the area and was employed by Pierce Glass Co., Port Allegany, retiring in 1990, after 30 years of service.
    
Mr. Walker was also a veteran of WWII, having served with the US Army.
    
Alvin was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed hiking and fishing.  He hiked several local trails including the Susquehannock Trail System (85 mi.) originating in Potter County.
    
Surviving are four daughters, Sandy L. (Richard) McGarvey, Cris M. (Dirk) Kio, Karen L. Thompson, and Sally A. (Perry) Hanchett all of Port Allegany; 7 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren; a brother, Ardell Walker of Knoxville, PA; and several nieces and nephews.
    
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Kathryn, a granddaughter, Denise McGarvey, a sister, Kathleen Tucker, and a brother, Clayton Walker.
      
Friends will be received from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 10, 2015) in the Switzer Funeral Home, Port Allegany, at which time a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. with Rev. Michael Culver, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Port Allegany, officiating.  Burial will be in Grimes Cemetery, Port Allegany.
    
A military service will be conducted by the Port Allegany Honor Guard immediately following the funeral service.
    
Memorials can be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
