Clearfield – Route 6 in McKean County will soon see
improvement work thanks to Act 89, the state’s new transportation plan. Work
will get underway on Wednesday for base repairs from East Smethport to Port
Allegany. Improvement work on Route 6 includes three sections: Hazelhurst to
Smethport, East Smethport to Port Allegany, and Port Allegany to the
McKean/Potter county line. The goal of the work is to improve the roadway
surface and ride quality and extend the useful life of the pavement.
As work begins between Smethport and Port Allegheny,
motorists should expect short travel delays, with alternating traffic patterns
enforced by flaggers in the roadway. This work is expected to take about one
month.
Glenn O. Hawbaker, Inc. of State College is the contractor
on this $7.5 million project. Work will continue through the fall and resume in
2015 as weather permits, completing in mid-July. Elk County sites for 2015
include Route 219 in the Johnsonburg area, Route 255 in the Johnsonburg area,
and Route 4007 (Silver Creek Road) in the Johnsonburg area.
Overall work will include base repairs, shoulder
improvements, tree trimming, drainage improvements, guide rail updates, bridge
deck repairs and paving. The tree trimming work will allow sunlight to reach
larger portions of the highway for longer periods of time, providing an additional
safety factor in the winter months. All work is weather and schedule dependent.
Governor Tom Corbett worked with the Legislature to secure
passage of Act 89, which is making more than $2.1 billion available in 2014 for
highway and bridge projects across the state.
Funding provided by Act 89 is enabling PennDOT to make
significant progress in addressing major roadway and bridge needs across the
region, including projects starting this year to resurface 175 miles of rough
pavement and rehabilitate 24 deteriorated bridges in District 2’s nine-county
area of Cameron, Centre, Clearfield, Clinton, Elk, Juniata, McKean, Mifflin and
Potter counties.
Aside from ACT 89, mid-September will also see other Elk
County work sites get underway.
Within the next week to ten days, drivers can expect to
encounter a repair work zone on a bridge along Route 219 north of Wilcox. Once
barriers are removed, crews will pave the bridge deck, with flaggers in the
roadway to direct traffic.
In mid to late September, work will take place in the
borough of Ridgway to place ADA ramps at two locations. ADA ramps will be
constructed at the corner of North Broad Street and Allenhurst and at the
intersection of North Broad Street and Race Street. There will be open
excavation of the sidewalk in these areas and pedestrians should use caution
when walking through these areas. The ramp work is expected to take about seven
days.

traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access
to more than 700 traffic cameras. 511PA is also available through a smartphone
application for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 5-1-1, or by following
