Don Mangold of Port Allegany poses by the pennant that hung in Mission
Control during the Apollo space missions. A flight expert employed by
NASA contractor Boeing, Mangold was part of the team that helped guide
the successful missions including the first moon landings, and the scary
Apollo 13 mission. Somehow he snagged the rare memento. Pinned to it
are some other rare keepsakes, including a button bearing the likeness
of Russian astronaut Yuri Gagarin. Mangold displayed some of his awards
and items from his career as an airplane mechanic and private pilot, at a
90th birthday celebration in his honor Friday at the Veterans Memorial
Home, attended by about 160 people. Martha Knight Photo
