Water aerobics fly-fishing and more planned at Pitt-Bradford this summer



BRADFORD, PA – The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford will hold a variety of enrichment courses for those looking for something new this spring and summer.

Water Aerobics will begin at the Paul C. Duke III Aquatic Center in the Richard E. and Ruth McDowell Sport and Fitness Center from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. on May 12 and run Mondays and Wednesdays through June 16. A second session will take place June 23 through July 30. Swimming skills are not necessary to participate. Cost is $49.

Kinzua Fly Fishing School will take place May 16-18. Included are two days of instruction by Joe Humphreys, a member of the Fly Fishing Hall of Fame, and a day of instruction from the Kinzua Fly Fishing School Staff. Two walks are planned along the Richard E. McDowell Trail the same weekend. The annual Walk MS will be held May 17 beginning at Blaisdell Hall, while Miles for Smiles will be held May 18.

Walk MS connects people living with MS and those who care about them while raising funds for research. Registration begins at 11 a.m. at Blaisdell Hall. One-mile and three-mile accessible routes are available. For more information, contact Colleen Szymczak-Gross at colleen.szymczak@nmss.org.

The Miles for Smiles 5k run and 2-mile walk with kids’ fun run raised $4,800 last year, which organizers split between the American Cancer Society and McKean County Special Olympics. The run begins at 9 a.m.  at the Sport and Fitness Center. Registration is $15. Kids Fun Run for children 14 and under is free. For more information, visit www.milesforsmilesrun.weebly.com.

The Allegheny National Forest Photo Trek is a two-day photography workshop May 17 and 18 in the ANF with photographer Ed Bernik. The workshop is customized to photographers’ level of experience. The $319 resident fee includes instruction, one night’s lodging on campus and meals. The $239 non-resident fee includes meals as well.

Writing Personal Narrative with Dr. Dani Weber will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays May 20 through June 10 in Room 200 of the Seneca Building, 2 Main St., Bradford. Those willing to share will have many opportunities to share their stories with the group. Cost is $79.

Everyday use of the iPhone/iPad will teach basic and efficient usage of the devices. The class will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. June 5 in Room 200 of the Seneca Building. Cost is $45.

The Pennsylvania Society of Ornithology comes to campus June 6-8. From 3:45 to 4:30 p.m. June 7 in Rice Auditorium in Fisher Hall, a program on raptors will be open to the public. Field trips for those registered include the Marilla/Willow Bay area, Tracy Ridge/Sugar Bay area, Kinzua Bridge area and more. Senior citizens from McKean, Elk, Potter and Cameron counties will arrive at Pitt-Bradford June 13 for the annual Four-County Senior Games. Events begin at 10 a.m. and include Wii bowling, darts, a basketball throw and a one-mile walk. For more information or to sign up, visit your local senior center.

The Bradford Creative and Performing Arts Center brings the Missoula Children’s Theater Workshop to Blaisdell Hall from June 16-20. After a full week of practice, the children will perform “The Pied Piper” at 2 p.m. June 21. Digital photography: Out and About in Your Community is a new class that will help participants learn the creative side of taking outdoor photos of nature, city life, candids, still life and anything else imaginable. It will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. June 24 and 8 to 11 p.m. June 26 at Pitt-Bradford. It will be presented again from 6 to 9 p.m. June 23 and 8 to 11 p.m. June 25 at the Community Education Council of Elk and Cameron Counties in St. Marys. Cost is $75.

What’s for Dinner? will cover guidelines and ideas for preparing healthy and easy meals for busy families. The class will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. June 24 in Room 200 of the Seneca Building. Cost is $29.

Food Choices – How they Affect You will explore the difference between the healthy eating pyramid and the USDA food pyramid, how processed foods affect your health, what to eat to maintain energy, how sugar affects your body and why low fat is not always a good choice. Class will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. July 15 in Room 200 of the Seneca Building. Cost is $29.

On Aug. 8, Rep. Martin Causer will hold his annual Senior Citizen’s Expo in the Sport and Fitness Center. Helpful information and assistance will be provided on issues such as health care, insurance, nutrition and exercise, and more. More details will be announced later.

Finally, a parent-and-child version of Pitt-Bradford’s popular Introduction to GPS and Geocaching course will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 9 at Kinzua Bridge State Park. Participate in a gentle, 1.5-mile geocaching treasure hunt on the park’s trails. Cost is $20 per participant.
