Lawrence O.
Griffith, Jr., 88, of Route 16 South, passed away peacefully Sunday (Apr. 6,
2014) at the home of his daughter.
Born
February 23, 1926, in Steubenville, OH, he was a son of Lawrence O. and Bertha
M. Blumenauer Griffith. On June 12, 1948, in New Haven, CT, he
married G. Trudy E. Rapp, who died Feb. 5, 2009.
Mr.
Griffith was works manager from 1951-64 with Pittsburgh Corning Co. of Sedalia,
MO, also works manager from 1964-69 with Pittsburgh Corning Co. of Port
Allegany, and last was manager of market development with Pittsburgh Corning
Co. of Pittsburgh, PA from 1969-73. He was also Port Allegany
Borough Manager for 12 years, and most recently a Wal-Mart greeter in Allegany,
NY, before his retirement.
Lawrence
was a veteran of WWII, having served with the US Navy from April 1943-May 1946
with the submarine service.
He was a
charter member of VFW Post 6391 of Port Allegany, a 25 year member of the Port
Allegany Rotary Club, 50 year member of F. & A.M. Lodge 505 of Port Allegany,
member of Coudersport Consistory, and also a member of US Submarine Veterans
WWII.
Surviving
are a son, Lawrence O. (Denise) Griffith, III of Enfield NH; a daughter,
Darlene H. (Ralph) Howard of Franklinville, NY, three grand-children, four
great-grandchildren; and three nieces.
He was
preceded in death by his parents, wife, Trudy, a brother, Charles C. Griffith,
and a sister Mary Margaret Dunn.
A memorial
service will be held in July at a date and place to be announced.
Memorials
can be made to the Veteran’s Memorial Home, or McKean County SPCA.
Funeral
arrangements are under the direction of the Switzer Funeral Home, Port
Allegany.
