November - Diabetes Awareness Month
What is diabetes?
Diabetes is a disease in which blood glucose levels are above
normal. Most of the food we eat is turned into glucose, or sugar, for
our bodies to use for energy. The pancreas, an organ that lies near the
stomach, makes a hormone called insulin to help glucose get into the
cells of our bodies. When you have diabetes, your body either doesn't
make enough insulin or can't use its own insulin as well as it should.
This causes sugar to build up in your blood.
Diabetes can cause serious health complications including heart
disease, blindness, kidney failure, and lower-extremity amputations.
Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States.
What are the symptoms of diabetes?
People who think they might have diabetes must visit a physician
for diagnosis. They might have SOME or NONE of the following symptoms:
- Frequent urination
- Excessive thirst
- Unexplained weight loss
- Extreme hunger
- Sudden vision changes
- Tingling or numbness in hands or feet
- Feeling very tired much of the time
- Very dry skin
- Sores that are slow to heal
- More infections than usual.
Nausea,
vomiting, or stomach pains may accompany some of these symptoms in the
abrupt onset of insulin-dependent diabetes, now called type 1 diabetes.
What are the risk factors for diabetes?
Risk factors for type 2 diabetes include older age, obesity, a
family history of diabetes, prior history of gestational diabetes,
impaired glucose tolerance, physical inactivity, and race/ethnicity.
African Americans, Hispanic/Latino Americans, American Indians, and some
Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are at particularly high risk for
type 2 diabetes.
Risk factors are less well defined for type 1 diabetes than for
type 2 diabetes, but autoimmune, genetic, and environmental factors are
involved in developing this type of diabetes.
Gestational diabetes occurs more frequently in African Americans,
Hispanic/Latino Americans, American Indians, and people with a family
history of diabetes than in other groups. Obesity is also associated
with higher risk. Women who have had gestational diabetes have a 35% to
60% chance of developing diabetes in the next 10–20 years.
Other specific types of diabetes, which may account for 1% to 5% of
all diagnosed cases, result from specific genetic syndromes, surgery,
drugs, malnutrition, infections, and other illnesses.

Cole Memorial is Recognized by the Joint Commission for Second Year in a Row!
Cole
Memorial was named one of the nation's Top Performers on Key Quality
Measures by The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of health care
organizations in America. Cole Memorial was recognized by The Joint
Commission for exemplary performance in using evidence-based clinical
processes that are shown to improve care for certain conditions,
including heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgical care,
children's asthma, stroke and venous thromboembolism, as well as
inpatient psychiatric services. New this year is a category for
immunization for pneumonia and influenza.
Cole Memorial is one of 1,099 hospitals in the U.S. earning the
distinction of Top Performer on Key Quality Measures for attaining and
sustaining excellence in accountability measure performance. Cole
Memorial was recognized for its achievement on the following measure
sets: Surgical care and pneumonia prevention. The ratings are based on
an aggregation of accountability measure data reported to The Joint
Commission during the 2012 calendar year and represents 33 percent of
all Joint Commission-accredited hospitals reporting data for 2012.
This is the second year in a row that Cole Memorial is being
recognized as a Top Performer. Last year, the Hospital was recognized by
The Joint Commission for achieving the same measure sets.
"While we celebrate the honors from various organizations that
monitor healthcare performance, Cole Memorial is focused on continuous
learning and improvement. We have turned our attention to gathering and
impacting measures of health throughout the communities we serve and we
are transforming our health system to prevent disease while continuing
to treat it," said Ed Pitchford, president and CEO of Cole Memorial.
"So, we are pleased that The Joint Commission has again recognized us
and we are confident that we will continue these successes on the path
of improving the lives of those who entrust their health to us."

American Heart Association (AHA) Heartsaver CPR AED Training
When a life is at stake, don’t settle for less—Learn CPR.
Did you know that nearly 80 percent of cardiac arrests happen
outside a hospital—such as at the park, at work, or at home? Right now,
about 90% of those victims die before reaching the hospital, but
statistics prove that if more people knew CPR, more lives could be
saved. Immediate CPR can double, or even triple, a victim’s survival
rate.
As part of an ongoing campaign to promote CPR, Cole Memorial is
excited to launch a new CPR Training Program that will help spread vital
CPR training throughout our community. Every three months, Cole
Memorial will host a CPR training targeted to meet different needs
within the community.
Join us on November 15th for our first CPR program!

The Cole Foundation Celebrates Loved Ones With Second Annual "Light Up A Life"
The
Cole Foundation’s second annual “Light Up A Life” celebration has
begun! On Thursday, December 5, the Cole Foundation will light a 60-foot
outdoor tree, located on the Cole Memorial Hospital campus as a
meaningful way to honor and remember special friends and family members
throughout the holiday season.
Each
gift of $10 or more will place a symbolic light on the “Light Up A
Life” tree. Each light on the tree will be a visual representation of a
gift, given in honor or memory of a loved one. All proceeds for the
program will be used to support the ongoing healthcare needs of Hospice
and Patterson Cancer Care patients at Cole Memorial. Each gift will be
acknowledged with a specially designed card sent to the person being
honored or to the family of a memorialized loved one.
“We
hope you will honor or remember those special people who have touched
your life, through a gift to the Cole Foundation during this holiday
season,” stated Patrice Levavasseur, executive director of the Cole
Foundation. “We look forward to the support of our communities and hope
you can join us at 5:30 p.m. on December 5th for our special tree
lighting ceremony and reception that will follow the event.”

Cole Memorial and First-Responder Conduct an Active Shooter Drill
On the morning of October 16, a mock “code silver” was called at
Cole Memorial while several police agencies and local emergency
management partners became engaged in an active shooter drill.
Officials say the emergency exercise is a necessary precaution to
educate the hospital’s incident command team and collaborate with
community emergency management agencies.
Yellow tape surrounded the fake shooting scene as actors were
provided medical services such as emergency triage, paramedic
transportation, mental health support and event updates.
“Cole Memorial’s Emergency Department staff and clinical care teams
were focused on practicing triage and rapid response treatment/transit,
said Cynthia Hardesty, vice president of Clinical Operations and chief
nursing officer. “This was a complex exercise that included caring for
the newly injured and maintaining care and a safe environment for our
existing patients. All of the staff did a great job!”
By 9:30 a.m., police and hospital public information officers
released a first injury count, which included three critically, one
serious plus the deceased shooter.
