Port Allegany man escapes injury



A Port Allegany man escaped injury yesterday afternoon after running his 2003 Freigh-tliner off Route 6 to avoid a collision in Liberty Township, McKean County.

Kane based state police who responded tell Port Allegany Online 44 year old Stephen W. Smith of Port Allegany was traveling east on Route 6 in the vicinity of Mountain Road.  While the Smith vehicle crested the hill, a 1972 General American truck operated by 52 year old Eric Johnston, also a Port Allegany resident, sat in the eastbound lane after stalling.  To avoid a collision, Smith veered to the left, where his tractor trailer impacted a rock embankment and jack-knifed.

Upon impact, Smith’s Freight-liner fuel tank was punctured, spilling a moderate amount of fuel and prompting a call to PennDOT, the McKean County EMA and the state DEP.

State police were assisted at the scene by Port Allegany Fire Department and Ambulance and Smethport Fire Department.
