Police Report

There were two reports that nothing was missing or stolen, but several reports of items having been stolen. The investigation of drug theft and tampering at an ambulance service in Bradford spilled over into the Port Allegany Ambulance Service.

Those were among matters Port Allegany Police dealt with in the week that began Monday, July 15 and ended Sunday, July 21.

Last Monday at 12:30 p.m. Officer Kyle Day received a report of a theft from a motor vehicle, where someone had removed two cases of soda from an unlocked car on East Maple Street, sometime Saturday night or early Sunday.

At 10 p.m. Officer Dave Distrola received a report that an erratic driver had come into town on North Main Street. The vehicle was found and stopped, but the driver appeared to be normal as to condition for driving. No charge or citation was issued.

At 11:51 p.m. Distrola received a report of a theft from a tent in which two persons had been camping under the Mill Street bridge. The campers said they had left for a time, and when they returned a double set of swords was missing from the tent.

Last Tuesday at 10:15 a.m. Officer William Wenzel received a complaint of a theft from a Main Street address where a person or persons unknown had removed a large water bottle half full of pennies, a hammer drill, two acetylene bottles, a pressure gauge and a heating core from a vehicle. The items were last seen between May and December of 2012. The padlock of the residence was found broken in April. No explanation was provided as to why the theft was not reported until now.

At 1 a.m. Wednesday Chief Distrola and Officer Colin Strawcutter responded to a report of a wire arcing at an Elm Street location. The Port Allegany Fire Department responded, but found that they could not handle the matter. The electric company had been at the scene Tuesday evening but had not solved the problem.

At 10:50 a.m. Officer Wenzel received a call about an incident on Roper Road in which a person was walking her dogs and one of them bit another dog that lives in the neighborhood. The call was referred to the state dog warden.

At 11:40 a.m. Wenzel received a complaint of a theft from a North Main Street address. The resident claimed that three checks had been stolen from his mail box, in three separate incidents.

At 2:30 p.m. Wenzel was told that medications may have been tampered with at the Port Area Ambulance Service (PAAS) headquarters. The call was referred to the next shift.

At 5 p.m. Officer Adam Dickerson went to the PAAS building to follow up on the information concerning possible drug tampering. No charges have been placed; investigation is continuing.

Friday at 3:50 p.m. Chief Distrola was called to the Port Allegany Community Pool area for a report of an unruly male yelling and swearing at his girlfriend. The subject was instructed to leave the area and not to return to the pool.

At 11:30 p.m. Officer Dickerson and Officer Strawcutter arrested Dale E. Link, 42, of 206 East Maple Street on suspicion of DUI. Charges are pending lab results of a blood alcohol content test.

At 2:05 p.m. Saturday Distrola received a call concerning a stray dog being captured on Mill Street. The caller was referred to the SPCA.

At 5 p.m. Officer Dickerson received a complaint of child abuse/assault alleging that Tim Maben, 29, of 12 North Main Street had assaulted his 11-month-old child. Maben was arrested and charged with simple assault and related charges; additional charges may be placed following further investigation. Maben was arraigned and remanded to McKean County Jail.

Sunday at 3:03 p.m. Officer Day responded to the scene of a motor vehicle crash at the intersection of U.S. Route 6 and State Route 155 on North Main Street. Cody Martin of Smethport, while operating a 2001 gold Toyota, ran into the back of a 2011 black Ford truck operated by Brandon Bliss of Port Allegany. No injuries were reported. Martin’s car required towing.  Martin was charged with a violation of the requirement to drive at a safe speed.

At 5:30 p.m. Day received a report of a broken window at a Pearl Street residence. The caller reported having been gone for two days, and discovering the damage after returning, but said there was nothing missing from the apartment.

At 6:23 p.m. Day received a call from someone who had found a wallet containing a large sum of cash. The owner was contacted, and was much relieved to find that the contents of the wallet were intact.
