Friends of the Library

Who are “Friends of the Library”?

“Friends of the Library” is a nationally known name for a group that serves as an auxiliary to the local library. Port Allegany “Friends” serve S.W. Smith Memorial Public Library and Bookmobile.  We meet monthly on the third Thursday at 3:00 (subject to change if there is interest by those who have day jobs).

For many years Port Friends have financially supported Reading Is FUNdamental in the elementary school and the summer reading program at the library.  We are excited about the additional space provided by the new building and are planning more events that we hope are of broader public interest.

In April, we encouraged folks to come to the new building by offering several programs during National Library Week, highlighted by Dorothy Dart who gave us an introduction to the life of Mary Todd Lincoln.

On June 19, at 2:00, Carolyn Smead, representing McKean County Historical Society, presented information about the “Underground Railroad in our Area”.  Other programs under consideration include presentations about:  hiking national trails, the lifestyle of a hobo, and the craft of quilting.

Friends are offering free Bridge lessons which started June 13.  Lessons in knitting and student test taking will soon be available.  Sign up at the library or call 642-9210.

There are endless possibilities of interesting activities that can be offered at our library.  We invite you to join “Friends of the Library” and help make it a “happening” place.
