Summer camps and workshops planned for school-age children and teens at Pitt-Bradford this summer

Bradford, PA – The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford this summer will host sports, academic and arts camps for students in kindergarten through high school.

Arts camps are Pot-Pot-Pottery for youth age 10 to 16 from June 17-28, Missoula Children’s Theatre workshop presented by the Bradford Creative Performing Arts Center from June 17-22, and Youth Writing Spectacular for writers aged 9 to 13 from July 8-11.

Pot-Pot-Pottery will allow youth to have fun working with clay through hand building, coil construction and throwing on a potter’s wheel. Class takes place from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday through Friday for two weeks, June 17-28, in the Pitt-Bradford ceramics studio. The $89 fee includes the cost of materials.

The week of June 17-22, BCPAC brings Missoula Children’s Theatre to Blaisdell Hall, where children who are entering first through 12th grades rehearse and put on a play in the space of a week. This week’s show is “Robinson Crusoe.” Applications will be made available on the BCPAC website, www.bcpac.com.

In July Dr. Dani Nier-Weber, director of the Writing Center at Pitt-Bradford, will lead four days of creativity and fun in the Youth Writing Spectacular from 8:30 to 11 a.m. July 8-11 in Room 158 of the Dr. Richard and Ruth McDowell Sport and Fitness Center. The cost is $75 per camper. Students should bring snacks for breaks.

Other camps for youth are the popular X-Treme Science and Pets ’n’ Vets camps.

X-Treme Science is for students who have completed grades 1-6 and lasts from 8:30 a.m. until noon June 24 through 27. Campers participate in labs and activities dealing with many different areas of science. They will learn about plants, birds, stream life, water quality, chemistry, physical science and more. Cost is $79 for first camper; $75 for siblings, which includes T-shirt(s) and program materials.

Pets ’n’ Vets Camp will be held Aug. 6-8 from 8:30 a.m. to noon for campers who have completed first, second and third grades and from 1:30 to 5 p.m. for campers who have completed fourth, fifth or sixth grades.

Students in both groups will include enjoyable, creative and instructional activities centered on children and their pets. They will explore how to approach a domestic animal, safety around animals, pet training, pet health care, first aid and feeding, and wild and exotic animal care. Cost of $69 includes program materials.

This year’s High School Enrichment Series begins with Crime Solving 101 from June 17-20, continues with Television Studio Production on July 15 and 16, and ends with Make Your Own Website on Aug. 13 and 14.

Crime Solving 101 with Dr. Tony Gaskew, director of the criminal justice program at Pitt-Bradford, is designed for campers aged 13 to 18 and will take place from 8:30 a.m. to noon June 17-20 on campus, including Pitt-Bradford’s Crime Scene Investigation House.

Students will be exposed to a variety of hands-on methods and strategies used to conduct a criminal investigation, including understanding the criminal justice system, learning about probable cause and case law, obtaining and writing search and arrest warrants, interviewing skills, studying forensic photography and more. Cost of the program is $89.
Television Studio Production will teach students how to create television newscasts and interview in a real-life, multi-camera digital studio. They will learn about the roles both behind and in front of the camera. Students will also learn how to perform for the moving image, produce, direct and serve as a studio production assistant. It will take place from 9 a.m. until noon July 15 and 16 in the television studio in Blaisdell Hall. Cost of the program is $89.

Making Your Own Website will teach students how to determine the layout, style and content of a site. At the end of class, there will be an open exhibition of the newly created websites. The class will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 13 and 14 in Room 236 of Swarts Hall. Cost of the program is $69.

Pitt-Bradford athletics will hold Swim Camp from June 10-14 and June 17-21, based on skill level. The coach of the camp is Ed Bahan, who has been head coach of the Pitt-Bradford swimming program for five years.
